Why the Sino-Vietnamese War resists a simple verdict

The 1979 war may have been a Chinese attempt to punish Vietnam and signal a regional hierarchy, although its aims remain contested.

Notes

About a dozen studies still yield no settled explanation of what the 1979 Sino-Vietnamese War was intended to achieve. One interpretation is that China sought to punish Vietnam and reassert a regional pecking order instead of conquering it outright. A costly attack was meant to show Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos which state held the greater power in the region. That message appears unsuccessful because Vietnam resisted and the meaning and outcome of the war remain disputed. The passage is also a lesson in historical method: declared aims, inferred political motives, battlefield results, and later claims of victory must be examined separately.
