The cost of an interception has to be compared with the warship or merchant vessel that an incoming weapon could damage. A cheap drone can still threaten an expensive tanker or container ship, making a more costly defensive shot worthwhile. Multiple close-in mounts can also gain engagement time by covering a threat without waiting for the ship to turn. The preferred fit therefore accepts more defensive equipment to protect a much more valuable ship. Laser systems are expected to improve the options, but their integration requires adequate generation, power storage, and supporting shipboard infrastructure.
Notable Point · 13:35-16:23
Intercept cost depends on the ship at risk
The value of a protected warship or cargo explains defensive expenditure, while laser weapons require much more than a power connection.
