Chapter · 3:50-6:30

Infrastructure sets a navy's maritime reach

Dockyards, coaling stations, and oil stations determine whether a fleet can sustain the speed, endurance, and operating areas its ships were designed for.

Notes

Ship speed alone does not determine which fleet has the stronger design. A fleet with many support stations can accept different propulsion and endurance trade-offs from one that must travel between scarce bases. The Royal Navy's worldwide infrastructure shaped both strategy and procurement. The proposed route from Singapore through Hong Kong and Weihaiwei toward Japan shows how successive bases could turn geography into operational reach.
