Infrared sensors instead of the Leigh Light

An ASW sensor answer explains why passive infrared could displace the Leigh Light and expand into naval night-fighting sights.

Question

Would the Leigh Light still be invented if modern infrared were available?

Short answer

Probably not: passive infrared could reveal submarines without the warning created by radar emissions or a searchlight, and the technology could also aid shipboard night sights.

Notes

The Leigh Light solved the final visual-acquisition problem during night attacks on surfaced submarines, but it also announced the attack. Passive infrared would let aircraft find and engage a target without a searchlight and potentially without an active radar warning. The same sensors could migrate to shipboard gun sights and improve night combat more broadly.
