Chapter ยท 4:59-7:17

Deception controls what the enemy thinks it discovered

Sun Tzu and a light-cavalry analogy frame deception as supplying an opponent with a convincing but curated picture.

Notes

Ruse de guerre belongs to the broader tradition of stratagem, including Sun Tzu's advice on misleading appearances. Light cavalry provides the land-warfare analogy: it gathers information while controlling what enemy scouts can observe. A patrol screen can even leave a route that looks like a hard-won gap in its coverage. The opposing scouts then return believing they discovered the information for themselves, although the patrols guided them toward the picture they were meant to see.
