Inflexible combined an ironclad frigate's hull ancestry with monitor-like turrets and the protection of an armoured fortress. Her citadel concentrated weight and fighting power but left the guns with awkward fields of fire around the ship's own structures. Peacetime firing restrictions were meant to prevent blast damage, while in war it might be preferable to damage the superstructure and fire first. Across the wider design sequence, heavy guns moved from constrained off-centre positions toward more workable centreline arrangements as tactics and naval architecture developed together.
