Translating infantry experience into civilian careers

Infantry veterans can bring leadership and practical judgment to nursing and university study even when they lack a directly transferable civilian trade.

Notes

Infantry service provides fewer obvious civilian trade skills than many technical military occupations. Leadership, problem-solving and organization still transfer beyond the military, even when a rifleman's practical training does not map directly onto another job. Nursing is suggested as a promising career because it requires hard work, practical judgment and composure when confronted with distressing situations. A personal recollection of an excellent nursing student who had been an infantry colour sergeant supports that suggestion. Former infantry personnel are also recalled as committed university students whose academic strengths developed later than the usual school-to-university route.
