Industrial world war stretched command across the globe

Pacific command disputes sat inside a global industrial war whose outcomes depended on coordinating distant theaters and sustaining them with ships, ammunition, food, and fuel.

Notes

Nimitz, MacArthur, political sponsors, and other commands competed over authority and priorities in the Pacific. MacArthur sought overall command of the war against Japan, while other proposals would have placed him under Nimitz, an arrangement Nimitz did not want. Those disputes accompanied Japanese Army-Navy arguments over resources and strategy. All operated within an industrial war fought continuously across multiple continents and oceans. Earlier global conflicts such as the Napoleonic wars provide a comparison, but the sustained scale of fighting and supply in World War II posed different demands. Logistics ships and convoys determined whether distant forces received the ammunition, food, and other supplies required to fight. Senior command therefore involved allocating resources between campaigns as well as directing forces already in action.
