Industrial networks behind Japanese capital-ship plans

The Anglo-Japanese Alliance connected Japan's ambitious designs to the much larger British maritime-industrial world.

Notes

The Anglo-Japanese Alliance enabled information exchange and connected Japan's more limited maritime industry to a deeper pool of British experience and infrastructure. This relationship did not require Japan to copy or buy British designs. British yards were numerous enough that some capital-ship builders could fail even while an enormous programme was under construction. Differences in riveting, metal pressing, facility location, and slipway turnaround show that industrial capacity depends on efficiency as well as raw yard numbers.
