Many wartime landing ships looked improvised because they relied on familiar industrial equipment and established merchant-ship conversions. Plans for turning liners into troopships and using davits to carry landing craft supplied a known starting point. Gantries, stern chutes, and other arrangements adapted those methods instead of depending on wholly new technology. Mechanized warfare changed the scale of the problem: an assault force had to land vehicles, infantry, and their supporting logistics quickly. The chance of opposition at the beach made speed still more important. These ships were practical wartime responses built from equipment and methods already understood.
