Induction traditions and the making of officer identity

Old initiation rituals illustrate both the hazards and institutional purpose of building a common culture among naval officers.

Notes

The initiation included head shaving, the nickname 'pebbles,' a staged loss of dinner, and later sharing cake and Madeira. Head shaving and denial of dinner make poor induction methods, and reshaping a recruit's identity is a delicate process. The organizational aim was to temper individualism enough for people to cooperate aboard ships and within fighting formations that demand close interoperability. Repeated across generations, such experiences also gave officers shared reference points for communicating culture and institutional memory.
