Would Indomitable simply have been sunk with Force Z?

A carrier would have changed Force Z's location, information, and air defence rather than merely adding another target to the same encounter.

Question

Would HMS Indomitable simply have been sunk if she had accompanied Force Z?

Short answer

Probably not, because her reconnaissance and fighters would have changed where the force sailed, how early it detected threats, and how effectively it resisted the long-range Japanese attack.

Notes

Adding Indomitable would not have left every other part of the operation unchanged. Carrier reconnaissance could have checked reports without taking Prince of Wales and Repulse toward the position where Japanese aircraft found them. Fighters from the carrier could also have broken up long-range attacks, while radio calls could have drawn additional Brewster Buffaloes from Singapore. The attacking aircraft were operating near the limits of their range and had sacrificed defensive protection for fuel. Indomitable's presence would therefore have altered both the chance of detection and the task force's ability to survive an attack.
