The Descartes class consisted of serviceable individual ships whose bespoke character limited French force generation. Jeune Ecole attracted attention partly because it appeared able to supply a unifying principle for a fragmented fleet. Other navies possessed different sources of cohesion: German technical excellence, Austro-Hungarian nation-building, American national assertion, and Royal Navy tradition. The larger question is whether design, construction, personnel, and doctrine formed a system capable of producing a coherent fleet.
Notable Point · 45:30-48:23
Individual ships cannot substitute for a unifying fleet system
The class was not intrinsically bad, but France lacked the common design and institutional principle needed to turn such ships into reliable force generation.
