Indianapolis's story continued to develop decades after the sinking and the controversy over responsibility. An expedition financed by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen located the wreckage in the Philippine Sea in 2017. In 2018 the crew were collectively awarded a Congressional Gold Medal. The discovery and award kept the loss, the rescue failures, and the treatment of the crew in public view long after 1945.
