The high-speed Little Boy delivery mission

Indianapolis carried Little Boy components from San Francisco to Tinian at exceptional speed before receiving routine onward orders.

Notes

Indianapolis left Hunters Point on 16 July 1945, within hours of the Trinity test, and crossed from San Francisco to Pearl Harbor in 74.5 hours at an average of about 29 knots. She delivered the bomb components to Tinian on 26 July, then went to Guam and sailed toward Leyte for training before joining Task Force 95. Crewmen who had completed their tours were relieved at Guam. The run used the speed for which the class had been designed, and the famous delivery then gave way to what appeared to be routine fleet movement on the route to her loss.
