Trade routes and food logistics made the Indian Ocean vital

Sea routes carried imperial trade and moved food and goods around India.

Notes

The Bay of Bengal contained dense merchant traffic and supported the movement of food and goods around India. Contemporary railways were oriented largely toward carrying products from the interior to ports rather than moving supplies laterally across the subcontinent. Road and truck capacity could not easily replace coastal shipping. Convoy security was therefore a social and economic requirement as well as a naval task, because disruption could damage internal distribution inside India.
