Would Andrew Cunningham have made a major difference during the Indian Ocean raid?
Short answerProbably not; Somerville was capable but under-resourced, and additional carriers or a successful night attack offered more leverage.
NotesReplacing James Somerville with Andrew Cunningham would not solve the Eastern Fleet's underlying shortages. The senior-command pool was thin, and Somerville had to combine theater and fleet responsibilities with too little staff and too few ships. A third or fourth British carrier would change the operational balance much more than a different admiral. Successful contact and attack at night could also let British carrier aircraft inflict enough damage before Japanese daylight aviation took control.
