Atlantis, Pinguin, and Kormoran in the auxiliary-raider war

The fates of Pinguin and Kormoran show how disguised German auxiliary cruisers kept the Indian Ocean commerce war active through 1941.

Notes

German auxiliary cruisers continued to threaten Indian Ocean shipping after Admiral Graf Spee's campaign. HMS Cornwall sank Pinguin in May 1941, while Atlantis remained at large. In November, HMAS Sydney and Kormoran destroyed one another in one of the theatre's best-known surface actions. The compressed chronology shows that commerce protection demanded persistent cruiser coverage rather than a single successful counter-raider sweep.
