Why money could not hurry Indian Dominion status

Indian self-government required political capacity and civilian balance that a larger imperial budget alone could not create.

Question

Could unlimited British funds have made India a full Dominion much earlier?

Short answer

Not by themselves. Dominion status required political development and civilian institutions able to balance the security structures strengthened under colonial rule.

Notes

Britain had expected India to become ready for Dominion status around 1950, but money alone could not accelerate that political development. Colonial administration strengthened military and security institutions that helped sustain imperial rule. Removing the colonizer without building counterweights could leave those coercive bodies disproportionately powerful. The transition therefore required civilian institutions, political self-determination, and time as well as financial investment.
