The settlement created an independent kingdom under King Otto

The 1830 and 1832 settlements fixed Greece's independence and borders, but installing a Bavarian Catholic prince created a new legitimacy problem in an Orthodox country.

Notes

The postwar settlement did more than end Ottoman sovereignty over Greece. The London Protocol recognized independence, while the 1832 conference and Treaty of Constantinople defined the new state's borders and installed Prince Otto of Bavaria as king. That great-power solution imported a Roman Catholic monarch into a heavily Orthodox society. His eventual deposition shows that diplomatic recognition did not automatically provide durable domestic legitimacy.
