Chapter · 14:22-15:20

Moving Independent Companies along the Norwegian coast

Transports and destroyer escorts distribute small Independent Companies among exposed northern Norwegian ports.

Notes

The documents follow No. 1 Independent Company, about three hundred men, arriving at Mo under destroyer escort. Three more companies sail shortly afterward for separate positions, with Colonel Gubbins acting as senior officer for the outlying forces. Their convoy divides off the Norwegian coast so detachments can reach assigned ports, while transports also carry wounded men away. Five Independent Companies are eventually sent to Norway, and the repeated escort work shows why Tribal-class destroyers proved useful. Even these small detachments depended on a chain of transport, escort, distribution, and evacuation.
