Chapter · 28:55-31:12

Imperial Twilight and preserving knowledge through collapse

An empire's collapse threatens its knowledge as well as its political order, especially when the surviving repositories depend on the same failing system.

Notes

Imperial Twilight imagines a world prepared as a knowledge vault while a human empire descends into civil war. The historical analogy is with losses of technology and understanding after the fall of the Roman Empire and some Chinese empires. Knowledge dispersed among many repositories has helped prevent comparable losses during modern imperial collapses. An interstellar empire raises a different problem because its planets depend on one another for trade, materials, and resources. Repositories embedded in that same system face the danger of collapsing with it, which gives the effort to preserve information its urgency.
