The Imperial Star Destroyer functions primarily as a battleship because its heavy turbolaser batteries, rather than its embarked fighters, provide its principal striking power. Four major barbettes on each side leave only half of them available on a broadside despite the hull's supposed emphasis on forward fire. A superfiring V arrangement would let six of eight mounts bear to either side while preserving an all-forward salvo. That would increase each broadside from four heavy mounts to six, a 50 percent gain without adding guns. The transition from sailing broadsides to engine-powered turret ships shows why flexible arcs matter more than repeating a visually familiar layout.

Imperial Star Destroyers and wasted firing arcs
An Imperial Star Destroyer's side-mounted heavy weapons waste the advantage claimed for its wedge-shaped, forward-facing design.
