Imperial Star Destroyers and doctrine-driven design

The Imperial Star Destroyer becomes a case study in how a ship can fit its government's intimidation doctrine while remaining a questionable fleet design.

Notes

The Star Destroyer is assessed like a real warship by asking what doctrine and political worldview produced it. Its heavy batteries, embarked troops, tractor beams, and seventy-two small craft create a platform for forcing a planet into submission as well as fighting in space. The crew figures reveal an extraordinarily officer-heavy organization, with more than 9,000 officers for roughly 27,850 enlisted personnel. Its concentrated, intimidating form suits the Empire's assumptions, although that internal coherence does not make the doctrine strategically sound. The design can therefore be understood on its own terms while still being criticized as a fleet choice.
