Could a non-declined British Empire build a much larger 1970s-80s escort fleet, and would it be enough for the Falklands?
Short answerThe exact list overstates simultaneous capacity, but the larger and more visible force would probably deter Argentina and produce different, longer-ranged ship designs.
NotesEven a surviving British imperial system would probably not build every proposed Type 21, Type 22, Type 42, and Type 43 simultaneously without a war or strategy to justify the output. More importantly, the Falklands War might never begin if Argentina faced a much larger collective force and a continuing British naval presence around the islands. Ships designed for an empire-wide force would also need greater range, speed, stores, and general-purpose capability than their historical counterparts. The scenario therefore changes both the designs and the political calculation that led to invasion.
