Image permissions and the costs of self-publishing

Self-publishing still requires money for covers and image permissions, while its academic recognition can remain limited.

Notes

Alex Clarke expects to pay for a suitable cover and picture rights for his ebooks. Image permissions and research travel had contributed to the credit-card costs of his earlier book. He wants a stronger financial position before buying further permissions so that he avoids repeating that borrowing. He also expects self-published books to carry less weight with universities because they lack the prestige of an established publisher.
