Chapter · 17:26-20:40

The destroyer action off Ile de Batz

Jones's flotilla broke the German sortie off Brittany, sinking or forcing the loss of two destroyers before they could threaten the invasion fleet.

Notes

Jones's divisions engaged the German force, with Ashanti and Tartar concentrating on ZH1 while Canadian Tribal-class destroyers Haida and Huron joined the pursuit. ZH1 was lost to gunfire and one or possibly two torpedoes. Z32 repeatedly evaded the Tribals before the Canadian ships finally caught it, while other German vessels withdrew toward a minefield the British could not safely enter. The action ended with one German destroyer sunk and another scuttled, against damage to Tartar that did not remove her from the operation. The German surface group never reached the D-Day landing craft, so the flotilla completed its defensive task.
