Sketching a multi-carrier US task force

A large task-force sketch layers two or three carriers with cruisers, destroyers, frigates, submarines, and support ships.

Question

What would an ideal carrier strike group and multi-carrier task force look like?

Short answer

The example combines two or three carriers with cruiser-sized ships, destroyers, frigates, submarines, and supply ships.

Notes

The proposed American example uses two or three carriers, about four cruiser-sized ships, a dozen destroyers, and a dozen frigates, with supply ships as well. Three carriers are described as sufficient to maintain six airborne early-warning aircraft, fighter cover, and the ability to launch a large strike. Four carriers would require more escorts and could tempt commanders to divide the force into two pairs. Three instead encourage an arrangement described as two carriers and a spare. Submarines are also included, although communication through salt water and their deliberately low detectability complicate coordination.
