Using I-400 submarines as minelayers

What would be a useful role for ten I-400-class submarines?

Minelaying is suggested as an alternative use for the ten large submarines. This follows an earlier answer that questioned whether their aircraft role would help Germany much and noted that the boats had other possible uses. No mine capacity or patrol plan is supplied.
