What I-17's 5.5-inch deck gun could do

I-17's gun specifications put the Ellwood shell estimates in perspective: its theoretical rate of fire greatly exceeded the likely bombardment total.

Notes

I-17's 5.5-inch 11th Year Type deck gun had a nominal five-round-per-minute firing rate, a muzzle velocity of 700 meters per second, and a maximum range of 16,000 meters. Its single mounting elevated to 30 degrees; the twin mounting's 40-degree elevation did not apply to I-17. Twenty minutes at the rated speed would yield 100 shots, well above contemporary estimates of 12 to 25 rounds at Ellwood. Roughly 25 is judged more plausible than either the lowest estimate or continuous maximum fire. The same gun had already sunk the tanker SS Emidio, while at Ellwood its shells missed the intended fuel tanks.
