The Halifax-to-Britain HX series completed 377 convoys and 17,745 ship journeys during the war. The totals given here are 38 convoys attacked and 206 ships lost: 110 while in convoy, 60 after straggling, and 36 after detachment or dispersal. That leaves 339 convoy sailings without an attack. The figures show that even a famous campaign of attrition did not make every crossing equally dangerous. They also explain why destroying an intact HX convoy would have mattered far beyond the tonnage sunk.
