HX 106 shows the deterrent value of one old battleship

HMS Ramillies made a valuable Halifax convoy too dangerous for Scharnhorst and Gneisenau to attack under their restrictive orders.

Notes

HX 106 carried large merchant ships and substantial cargo behind an escort that included HMS Ramillies, destroyers, corvettes, and trawlers. Although Ramillies was old and slow, she could call for help, shelter within smoke, and inflict the damage that a distant German raider could not afford. Hoffman tried to draw her away, but the convoy escort held its position and Lütjens cancelled the attack. Ramillies succeeded through deterrence, preserving the convoy without needing to chase the faster ships.
