The dangerous Malta convoy cycle faded after 1942 as Axis forces were pushed back across Libya and Tunisia. Supplies no longer needed to cross the full Mediterranean under the same level of threat. Operation Husky then put Allied forces on Sicily, directly opposite Malta, and shortened the route further. Success ashore and control of nearby coasts changed the naval logistics problem instead of merely improving the escort of the old route.
