Type IV: Thornycroft's heavier Hunt

Only two Type IV Hunts were built, combining Type II gun armament with three torpedo tubes but growing substantially heavier on unchanged machinery.

Notes

Thornycroft's Type IV design preserved the Type II's gun armament while increasing torpedo armament to three 21-inch tubes. It appears to have been an attempt to turn an escort-grade destroyer into something closer to a small fleet destroyer without supplying the power and armament needed for that role. Brecon and Brissenden displaced far more than earlier Hunts but retained the same basic engines. The subclass was an interesting but unsuccessful effort to broaden the design's combat role.
