Hunt-class ships were intended to move quickly enough to pursue submarines while remaining comparatively economical to build. In the planned carrier screen, they would be backed by fleet destroyers carrying torpedoes for surface threats and, in a fuller force, by larger Tribal-class destroyers. That layered formation assigned different ships to underwater, air, and surface dangers instead of demanding every escort carry the same weapons. The Hunt's anti-submarine role belonged within this wider architecture of fleet defence.
