The prewar design timeline of the Hunt and Flower classes

Orders placed in March 1939 required completed specifications and months of naval-constructor work, disproving the story of an instant Churchillian wartime invention.

Notes

The Hunt-class escort destroyer and Flower-class corvette designs were ready to be ordered in March 1939. A ship specification had to account for machinery, weapons, electrical capacity, crew spaces, galleys, and many other systems before an order could be placed. The estimated nine-month design period suggests that the requirements were likely settled by June 1938 and were certainly final by August. Churchill did not return to the Admiralty until war began, so this chronology rules out the claim that he personally invented the programme as an emergency reaction.
