The Hundred Years' Wars and misleading round numbers

The Hundred Years' War and the Second Hundred Years' War illustrate how a conflict's name can conceal its duration and the choices about which wars belong together.

Notes

The Hundred Years' War is counted here as 113 years despite its round-number name. The Second Hundred Years' War groups Revolutionary Wars with ongoing Anglo-French conflicts across the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. Its duration is put at roughly 106 years, depending on which wars are included. Both names compress complicated sequences of conflict into memorable labels. Choosing the constituent wars and their starting and ending points changes the arithmetic, so the label alone cannot supply an exact duration.
