The Huguenot share is estimated at roughly a third of the French Navy's officer corps and about half of its senior officers. Their prominence at the top reflected longer naval careers: they owed their positions to naval service and tended to remain in it. Many other noble officers served for a time before returning to their estates. Louis XIV's policy therefore removed a disproportionate share of experienced career officers.
