Chapter · 2:23-3:33

A Peruvian monitor with a Chilean afterlife

Huáscar's Peruvian and Chilean service connects two civil wars, the War of the Pacific, and the modern preservation of South America's ironclad history.

Notes

Huáscar entered service with Peru, was captured and commissioned by Chile, and remains afloat as a memorial ship. Its career included the Peruvian Civil War, the War of the Pacific, and the Chilean Civil War. The same hull therefore belongs to the national histories of both former opponents. Its survival provides a rare physical example of a warship that served on both sides of nineteenth-century South American naval conflicts.
