Chapter · 23:40-27:55

Howard's command team and the Dutch blockade

Charles Howard imposed discipline on experienced deputies while Justinus van Nassau kept Parma's transport craft trapped behind Dutch shallow-water forces.

Notes

Howard understood both seafaring and the personalities under his command, curbing the privateers' opportunism when fleet cohesion mattered. His authority was practical: when he was present, celebrated subordinates such as Drake had to put fleet duty ahead of prizes and personal opportunity. Drake and Hawkins supplied experienced leadership within that common command structure. The often-overlooked Dutch commander Justinus van Nassau completed the coalition effort by blocking the shallow approaches that Parma's barges needed to leave port.
