Do hovercraft avoid the danger of minefields?
Short answerNo. Mines and skirt damage remain dangerous, so the approach still needs to be cleared before landing craft or hovercraft are sent in.
NotesA hovercraft cannot simply float across an uncleared minefield. Its low ground pressure may reduce direct loading, but the air cushion sends vibrations into the surface that can still initiate mines. Even an anti-personnel mine can tear the skirt, drop the hull, and expose the craft to heavier charges beneath it. Hovercraft and conventional landing craft therefore both require cleared approaches rather than treating minefields as harmless obstacles.
