How a pilgrim hospital became a military order

The Hospitallers developed from an Amalfitan-supported hospital for pilgrims into a sovereign military-religious order while retaining care for the sick as a defining obligation.

Notes

The account begins with an Amalfitan-supported hospital in Jerusalem that admitted poor, sick, or injured pilgrims regardless of nationality or faith. Papal recognition in 1113 gave the institution independence from local lay and religious authorities. Danger in the Crusader states then encouraged military organization and a formal duty to defend pilgrims and the faith. Care for the sick remained important enough to distinguish the Hospitallers from the Knights Templar even as both embodied crusading warfare. The resulting order later defended Rhodes and Malta against the Ottoman Turks, creating a continuous institutional line into the modern Order of Malta.
