Should hospital ships carry CIWS?

The argument for close-in defence rests on accidental missile attack and short reaction time, while wider-area weapons raise a harder neutrality question.

Question

Should an otherwise protected hospital ship be armed with CIWS or point-defence missiles?

Short answer

CIWS is defensible as last-ditch protection against accidental missile attack; wider-area point-defence missiles are a more difficult case.

Notes

A hospital ship may need a close-in weapon system for immediate self-protection. A long-range missile cannot see red crosses or understand the ship's open broadcasts, and a targeting error may leave very little warning time. Hypersonic weapons sharpen that problem because the crew may have only moments to recognize and engage an accidental approach. Point-defence missiles are a harder case because their protective bubble reaches farther, blurring the line between last-ditch survival and broader combat participation.
