Hood's career combined battleship and cruiser commands with naval intelligence, an American attaché posting, naval education, and service as naval secretary to Winston Churchill. While commanding HMS Hyacinth, he led roughly 754 men, including 127 from the Hampshire Regiment, through heavy surf in a night landing against Dervish forces at Illig. That operation gave him direct amphibious experience before the Admiralty asked him to organize the Dover Patrol. Sea command, landing experience, staff work, and political understanding made him well suited to the new force's demands.
