Why a shell down Hood's funnel is an implausible explanation

The geometry of a plunging shell makes a clean funnel entry far less plausible than the familiar story suggests.

Question

Could the shell that destroyed Hood simply have travelled down a funnel?

Short answer

It is extremely unlikely because the target area and shell trajectory demand exceptional alignment, unlike a deliberately aimed diving attack.

Notes

A funnel is a small target, and a shell approaching on a ballistic arc would need extraordinary alignment to enter rather than strike an edge and burst outside. The comparison with dive bombing is misleading because a dive bomber can aim while descending much more nearly vertically.
