Chapter · 2:28:16-2:32:59

Honours, wounds, and disputed credit

Peerages, baronetcies, pensions, promotions, and medals rewarded the victory but also exposed bitter arguments about whose conduct deserved recognition.

Notes

Howe declined further elevation, while Graves and Hood received peerage honours and wounded flag officers received titles and pensions. First lieutenants were promoted, and a Westminster Abbey memorial commemorated Captains John Hutt and John Harvey. Howe's published list of deserving officers then became a boundary between those publicly credited and those omitted. Collingwood's refusal of later honours until he received recognition for 1 June shows how medals and lists shaped professional reputation long after the battle.
