Naval concepts in the Honor Harrington novels

Why do the Honor Harrington books use concepts that also appear in discussions of real warships?

David Weber's Honor Harrington novels draw on established naval concepts. These ideas have existed for a long time, even if they receive limited attention in wider discussion. Their appearance in the novels does not make them inventions of that fictional setting.
