Town-class cruisers join the Home Fleet

Southampton, Newcastle, Sheffield, and Glasgow concentrate in the Home Fleet as fast counters to surface raiders amid German rearmament and the Spanish Civil War.

Notes

The first four Town-class cruisers formed the Second Cruiser Squadron rather than dispersing immediately across imperial stations. Their concentration supported royal security duties, presence during the Spanish Civil War, and preparation for German surface raiders breaking into the Atlantic. The assignment placed fast counter-raider cruisers close to the likeliest German breakout routes while British observers followed German rearmament. Birmingham went instead to the China Station. Belfast and Edinburgh joined the Home Fleet group in 1939, although both had been conceived with Pacific requirements strongly in view.
