Lancelot Holland's career shows the command experience Lütjens lacked

The nearly same-aged admirals entered their navies only five years apart, yet Holland accumulated repeated cruiser, battleship, and squadron commands before Denmark Strait.

Notes

Holland had commanded HMS Kite, Vindictive, Hawkins, and Revenge before leading battle squadrons, the Channel Force, and a cruiser squadron. He took command of the Battlecruiser Squadron after years of senior sea appointments. Lütjens had one year commanding a light cruiser amid a career dominated by torpedo boats and staff work. They were almost the same age. Their careers offered very different preparation for leading major warships in battle.
