Holding a captured position required supply and responsive artillery

A breakthrough mattered only if the defenders could survive the counterattack and keep supplies moving.

Notes

Taking an enemy position was followed by the problem of surviving the counterattack. Better supply and methods of advancing with fewer losses helped the Allies retain captured ground. Aerial control and faster reporting also allowed artillery to target forces assembling for a counterstroke. Fire plans became more responsive as communication improved. In earlier attacks, a predetermined artillery schedule could remain fixed for hours even as the battlefield changed.
